GitHub Code-Collaboration Platform (2008)

Class card for the GitHub platform, the dominant DM-Day hub for version-controlled software collaboration at global scale. Founded April 2008 in San Francisco by Tom Preston-Werner, Chris Wanstrath, PJ Hyett, and Scott Chacon; built on Linus Torvalds's Git distributed version-control system (2005). GitHub introduced the social-coding model — fork-and-pull-request workflow — that became the canonical DM default for open-source software by 2013. By 2018 the platform hosted 80M+ repositories and had 28M+ developers; Microsoft acquired it in June 2018 for $7.5 billion, the largest developer-tools acquisition in history. Post-acquisition the platform's capture_resistance dropped sharply (LOW post-2018) while its infrastructural gravity increased: GitHub Actions (CI/CD, September 2019), Codespaces (cloud development environments, 2020), and Copilot (LLM-based AI coding assistant, announced June 2021; GA November 2022; 100M+ users by 2024 per Microsoft 10-K). GitHub is now the AI-coding-infrastructure substrate for the OpenAI/Microsoft partnership.
