Sears, Roebuck & Co. Mail-Order Complex (1886)

lifespan: 132 yrs · motor: pull
Class card for Sears, Roebuck & Co. as the canonical MM-Day catalog mail-order and retail complex — the first national-scale demand-aggregation machine for American consumers. Founded 1886 when Richard W. Sears (R.W. Sears Watch Company, Minneapolis) began selling watches by mail; partnered Alvah C. Roebuck 1887; incorporated as Sears, Roebuck & Co. in Chicago 1893. The operational grammar: print catalog as price-transparent demand aggregation, US Postal Service + railroad freight as distribution substrate, Chicago as hub-and-spoke logistics center. By 1900 circulating ~5 million catalogs per year. Julius Rosenwald joined 1895 and institutionalized systematic warehousing, supplier relations, and the "satisfaction guaranteed" contract. Catalog circulation peaked ~15M by 1920s. Retail-store expansion from 1925 under General Robert E. Wood (hired 1924; president 1928): Wood redirected Sears from mail-order toward suburban retail-store format ahead of automobile diffusion. Allstate Insurance subsidiary founded 1931 (spun off 1995). Sears Tower Chicago built 1970–1973 (world's tallest building until 1998). Discover Card launched 1985 (spun off 2007). Dean Witter acquired 1981; Coldwell Banker acquired 1981 — Sears attempted "socks and stocks" financial-services diversification in 1980s. Suburban-mall anchor 1950s–1980s; Craftsman tools + Kenmore appliances as canonical house-brand outputs. Displacement: Walmart (1990s, Everyday Low Price at lower cost structure) + Amazon (2000s+, online catalog superiority) progressively rendered Sears's pull-telos and catalog OPP irrelevant. Eddie Lampert (ESL Investments hedge fund) acquired Kmart 2003 and engineered Kmart–Sears Holdings merger 2005; Lampert became CEO 2013; filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy October 15 2018. Transform Holdco (Lampert) acquired assets from bankruptcy for ~$5.2B; Sears continues as zombie retailer (~12 stores 2024). Machine's artifact_type_in_2026: ennervated_necromancy — brand persists as trademark-shell + post-bankruptcy zombie; no living commercial practice reproduces the catalog mail-order OPP at any scale.
