lifespan: 100 yrs · motor: emergence

Crowdsourced, multilingual, open-content encyclopedia launched 2001-01-15 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger under Bomis Inc., transferred to the Wikimedia Foundation (501(c)(3)) in 2003. Wikipedia is the singularly load-bearing DM-Dawn instance of the peer-production information commons — the first artifact in which an emergent (motor: emergence), crowdsourced machine displaced a centuries-long line of editorially-aristocratic encyclopedias. V2.5 GAP: emergence_subtype = crowdsourced (per §11.43 EmergenceSubtype enum); this field has no top-level Machine slot in schema v0.1 and is therefore recorded here in the description string pending the V2.5 schema extension. Motor is emergence driven by volunteer peer production (Benkler commons-based peer production); not flywheel (no two-sided platform network effect at the core). Substrate flips from the MM print-culture scholar-bureaucratic model to a hybrid cognitive + semiotic + social machine with lightweight institutional shell (WMF governance + open license). Intra-DM couplings: owned by WMF, depends on Creative Commons licensing, mutualistic symbiosis with Alphabet/Google search, template for the MediaWiki/wiki ecosystem. Cross-era sublimation: renders Encyclopaedia Britannica's OPP for general-reference queries irrelevant without formal succession (P29-critical: sublimation_coupling, not substitution). Inherits verifiability substrate from MM print culture and reterritorializes the Humboldtian university's research-via-teaching model as articles-via-verifiability.
